The Thai capital of Bangkok this year overtook London, Paris and Dubai as the world's first tourist destination, texting through Twitter, according to an annual rating issued by MasterCard credit cards on Thursday.
Bangkok topped the list of 132 cities, ranked in terms of the number of foreign tourists according to the index of "Mastercard" of global destinations.
"It will not only be just once; Vankok is in a strong position to become the first tourist destination for a long time," said Uwe Hydrick, chief economist at MasterCard. "It offers an advantage in terms of money value," he said. "Especially for tourists from high-income countries."
Bangkok is expected to end this year with 21.47 million tourists, ahead of London, which is estimated to have 19.88 million tourists. The whole of Thailand is expected to have 33 million tourists this year, a new record due to a jump in tourist numbers The Chinese.
Tourism has become one of the few points of excellence in Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, which has been hit by consumer confidence and exports since the 2014 coup. South Thailand saw a wave of bombings last month, but its impact on tourism seems limited.
